ABOUT PAUL DAVIDSON, M.D., M.A., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.R.
Dr. Paul Davidson had his medical training at Albany Medical College, New York State, followed by an internship at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following this he had a 3 year residency at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota where he finished his training in Internal Medicine and received a Master's Degree in Medicine from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. It was at Mayo Clinic that he first became interested in the field of Rheumatology, primarily because at that time the most famous of the world's rheumatologists were his professors. One, Dr. Philip S. Hench, had received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering the use of cortisone in rheumatoid arthritis. During his fellowship, the Rheumatologists at Mayo Clinic were just getting interested in fibromyalgia, which was then still called fibrositis. Dr. Davidson's interest in fibromyalgia and the many forms of soft tissue rheumatism began at this time and has continued.
After Mayo cane a 2 year stint as a Captain in the U.S. army. His first year was spent as Chief of the Outpatient Clinic at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and the second year as Assistant Chief of the Outpaitient Clinic at Tripler General Hospital - the primary Army Hospital in the Pacific Theater. He was responsible for overseeing treatment for Army, Navy, Air Force Merchant Marine and U.S. government personnel, as well as armed forces dependents in the Hawaiian Islands.
After his army service, he was granted an NIH (National Institues of Health) Fellowship in Rheumatology at the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco and after became an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine there, as well as beginning a private practice in Marin County, California. He practiced Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and later restricted his practice to Rheumatology. Beginning August 1, 2007, his practice will be limited to treating the fibromyalgia syndrome.
In 1985 he authored the book "Are You Sure It's Arthritis?: A Guide to Soft Tissue Rheumatism, published by Macmillan. The chapter that garnered the most attention was the one on fibromyalgia, and in 1989 he authored and later revised his book "Chronic Muscle Pain Syndrome", which was published by Random House and was the first book for the lay public on fibromyalgia. It was here that he described the RETRAIN program, which later became the standard multidisciplinary method of treatment for the fibromyalgia syndrome. He later co-authored the book "Understanding Fibromyalgia: A Guide for Family and Friends" with Betty Dotterer.
In 1989 he organized and was Medical Director of the the Fibromyalgia Clinic at Kentfield Rehabilitation Hospital in Kentfield California. He is a Founding Fellow of the American Rheumatism Association (ARA) and is a member of the National Arthritis Foundation as well as other related societies. He has give many talks to physicians about fibromyalgia and also to lay groups and has had a host of interviews on radio and TV, both locally and nationally.
